Ambassador Andrius Kalindra Presents His Letters of Credence to the President of the Hellenic Republic
On 17 September in Athens, H.E. Mr. Andrius Kalindra, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the Hellenic Republic, presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. Mr. Constantine An. Tasoulas, President of the Hellenic Republic.
During the meeting with the President of the Hellenic Republic following the presentation of credentials ceremony, the parties discussed the agenda of bilateral relations and political dialogue between Lithuania and Greece, opportunities for their further strengthening, and exchanged views on joint efforts in the context of the two countries’ Presidencies of the Council of the European Union in 2027.
Particular attention was devoted to strengthening the European Union and NATO, as well as to the role of the transatlantic relationship in effectively addressing emerging geopolitical challenges. The Ambassador noted that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are fundamental principles of international law that must be respected unconditionally in order to ensure peace and security worldwide. Ambassador Kalindra emphasized that Lithuania and Greece, as EU and NATO border states, contribute in solidarity to strengthening the security of both the Alliance and the Union and to protecting their external borders. This practical cooperation is demonstrated by Lithuania’s active participation in missions of the EU agency Frontex in Greece.
The Ambassador stated that the successive Lithuanian and Greek Presidencies of the Council of the European Union in 2027 provide a unique opportunity for even closer cooperation and for ensuring continuity on key issues on the EU agenda. Preparations for the forthcoming visit of the President of the Republic of Lithuania to Athens were also discussed. The visit will provide further impetus to the partnership between the two countries.
Greece recognized the Republic of Lithuania de jure on 22 May 1922. Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Greece were re-established on 7 January 1992, and the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Athens was established in 1997. Ambassador Andrius Kalindra is the eighth Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania accredited to Greece since the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and the seventh Lithuanian Ambassador to reside in Athens.
