Functions of consular officer
Lithuanian consular officers in Greece can
- issue a certificate of return if a passport or another identity document is lost abroad;
- issue relevant certificates if a driver’s license or vehicle registration certificate is lost abroad;
- accept applications for Lithuanian citizenship;
- accept applications for issuing or replacing a Lithuanian passport and identity card;
- accept declarations of residence from citizens who have left Lithuania for a period longer than 6 months, if this was not done in Lithuania;
- accept applications from Lithuanian citizens to amend, correct, or supplement civil status records, and to register in Lithuania civil acts performed abroad;
- mediate in obtaining archival certificates;
- mediate in obtaining criminal record (or non-criminal record) certificates;
- issue consular certificates as provided by law;
- perform certain notarial acts for Lithuanian citizens;
- mediate in the consular legalization of documents;
- provide information and issue permits for the repatriation of remains to Lithuania;
- if money is lost abroad, provide information on the fastest ways for relatives in Lithuania to transfer money abroad;
- in exceptional cases, when there is no possibility for the affected citizen to receive help from other sources, mediate in obtaining financial assistance from the state budget, after the person signs a written commitment to repay it upon returning to Lithuania;
- when there is justified necessity, meet with detained Lithuanian citizens and, upon their request, visit them in places of detention;
- demand that the rights of detained or convicted Lithuanian citizens abroad are respected according to the laws of that country and international treaties;
- during elections, ensure that Lithuanian citizens can vote at diplomatic missions and consular offices.
Lithuanian consular officers in Greece cannot
- issue Schengen visas or Lithuanian visas to foreign nationals;
- perform functions of travel agencies, translators, or guides;
- provide funeral services;
- provide banking or postal services;
- mediate in employment abroad, or in obtaining visas, residence permits, or work permits in foreign countries;
- provide accommodation or other housing;
- ensure better treatment in hospitals or detention facilities than what is provided to that country’s citizens;
- lend or give money from personal or budgetary funds, hire lawyers, or pay hospital, hotel, or other bills;
- act as your legal representative in court;
- influence or otherwise interfere in the work of foreign law enforcement or other authorities.
