Watch a virtual celebration, marking restored independence of Lithuania

On 15 September 2020, Lithuanian embassy in Greece held a virtual diplomatic reception to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania's independence.

During the event, the Embassy also recognized the Greek individuals and institutions who contributed to the development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Greece in areas of diplomacy, economy, culture, sports and people-to-people contacts, and ran a charity auction to assist ‘Symplefsi’, a Greek non-profit organization that provides support to communities living on the remote Greek islands.

In his openining adddress Lithuania's ambasasdor to Greece Rolandas Kačinskas said:

"During 50 years of occupation, the Soviet regime made every effort to erase the idea of freedom and independence from the historical memory of the nation.

If it had succeeded, there would have been no March 11 in 1990, no collapse of the Soviet Union, no modern and successful Baltic nations, building their future on the foundation of European values and norms. Europe would be quite different today.

Therefore, we would like to think that today’s celebration bears a great meaning not only for us, but for other nations and countries too."
